Serbian professional tennis player, Novak Djokovic was forced to pull out in the Dubai Tennis Championships after suffering from an eye ailment. This happened during his quarter-final match against Feliciano Lopez. Djokovic, who is currently ranked number 1 in the world, informed the referee of his decision after Lopez took 6-3 in the opening set.
At his post-match news conference, Djokovic told reporters that he’s got an eye problem. He revealed he has had it ever since he arrived in Dubai. It started with an infection followed by a severe allergy, said Djokovic. He further explained that the infection started in his right eye, then presented in both eyes. He was told not to wear his contact lenses except for during matches because it would worsen the condition.
Novak Djokovic Racks Up the Wins
Earlier this week, the four-time Dubai champion, had recorded the 700th victory of his tennis career. Having won up to 14 victories already this season, the champion was forced to withdraw from the event.
Lopez, who held to his advantage, will face Cyprus Marcos Baghdatis in the Dubai Tennis Championships semi-finals after Djokovic’s exit.
The Highly Anticipated Semi-Finals
Stan Wawrinka who beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5 6-1 will face Nick Kyrgios in the highly anticipated semi-final match of the championship. The clash between Kohlschreiber and Wawrinka will be the first contest between the two since their shameful match in Montreal last year August.
