Former AC Milan captain and Italy manager Cesare Maldini has passed away at the age of 84. As a player, he won four league championships and one European Cup with the Rossoneri between 1954 and 1962. As the team’s assistant manager, he helped Italy win the World Cup in 1982. Before going to lead Paraguay in the World Cup in 2002, Maldini got the opportunity to coach his son Paolo as Italy’s manager.
His former club AC Milan sent words of comforts to the Maldini family following his passing. Maldini captained the club to its first European Cup victory in 1963 and the loss of a man of his calibre in Rossoneri history has left every AC Milan member saddened and moved. Maldini did not only leave a mark at the club as a player, but also as a coach and guide. AC Milan’s president, Silvio Berlusconi and the rest of the club said they’ll always remember his charisma, warm smile and kindness.
Former AC Milan defender Mauro Tassotti also expressed his loss. He said he had no idea that Maldini was not well and it’s such a shock for Paolo, but also for his family and football nation as a whole.
