World ranked number two Andy Murray has become the fifth British player to reach the second round in the US Open 2016. The 29-year-old beat Lukas Rosol 6-3 6-2 6-2 and will face Marcel Granollers in round two in New York.
The Scottish player joined fellow Britons Naomi Broady and Dan Evans as a winner on the second day, with Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund already through to round two.
On Tuesday, 30th August 2016, compatriots Aljaz Bedene and Heather Watson both suffered first-around defeats. Former British number one Watson lost 6-2 7-5 to Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp. She was struggling with illness and has now failed to go through to the next round in Flushing Meadows. Fellow citizen Bedene lost 6-4 6-4 6-4 to an Australian Nick Kyrgios.
Laura Robson was beaten 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-4 by compatriot Broady to secure the second Grand Slam main-draw victory. Evans claimed his spot into the second round after defeating the American Rajeev Ram 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1.

Speaking to BBC Sports reporters, Murray said he served very well. He doesn’t think he had any break points against himself, and he had a good variation on the second serve. Murray hit 11 aces and made 17 voluntary faults. He further stated that the match was tough at the start, and once he got the break-up, he began to relax and play well.
