Wimbledon and Olympic Champion Andy Murray has been named as the Rio Olympics flagbearer. The world No.2 will be carrying the Great Britain flag at Friday’s Rio 2016 opening ceremony. The 29-year-old was chosen ahead the likes of rower Katherine Grainger and boxer Nicola Adams.
Commenting on being chosen as Team Great Britain flagbearer, Murray said it’s an incredible honour to lead out Team Great Britain at the Olympics. He further added that he has great memories of the country and he’s 100% focused on winning at the Rio Olympics. He closed his remarks by saying, the privilege of carrying the national flag is a moment he will cherish for the rest of his life and will certainly be one of the greatest highlights of his career.
Andy Murray Teams Up with His Brother Jamie Murray
Murray, who led Great Britain to the Davis Cup in November 2015, is the first tennis player to take the role as the flagbearer. Murray will be teaming up with his brother Jamie Murray in the doubles tournament.
The Grand-Slam champion is the second favourite to retain his championship behind world’s No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The Serbian was beaten by Murray four years ago on grass in the semi-finals but reigns supreme on the hard courts.
