Laura Wright who led the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup impressed the fans with her beautiful music. She described the ceremony as the biggest night of her life and it was a very emotional performance. The soprano singer, who sang ‘World In Union’ at the opening ceremony said taking part in the ceremony was the biggest highlight of her singing career. “There was something special about that night. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry were also there watching me perform live”- Wright said.
Wright is also a rugby player and she wants to encourage girls to also take part in rugby as it’s considered to be a male dominated sport. She admits that playing rugby causes bruises, but it is part of the game and girls need to be encouraged.
“I broke half of my front tooth in my first game, although I was wearing a gumshield. My dad was also there supporting me and deep down I knew that he was very proud that I was in a battle,” – Wright says.
Laura Wright Dressed for the Occasion
Her mesh and chiffon dress was designed by Michael Sharp. Sharp also dresses the famous pop star Katy Perry. Wright and Sharp talked about the idea that she’s the sporting soprano, so he designed something that was sporty and stylish at the same time.
The opening match between England and Fiji
After Wright’s classic performance, the battle between the host nation England and Fiji began. England escaped a tough test against Fiji in their World Cup opening match. Before half time, England was leading Fiji by 18-8 through a penalty try. When they came back from half time, they managed to win 35-11.
England captain, Chris Robshaw was happy with the results. He gave credit to Fiji for putting them under a lot of pressure and he always knew that it was going to be a tough match playing against them. “With Fiji’s good recent record, they made us work very hard, training 12 weeks in preparation of our opening match”- Robshaw said.
England will face Wales in their next match on Saturday, 26 September 2015 at 20:00 at Twickenham.
