EFA Launches Forum to Prevent Match-Fixing

On Nov. 17, the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster in London hosted an official launch event to promote the Football Association’s (FA) new Sports Betting Integrity Forum.

The Forum plans to build upon the good work of the Tripartite initiative, a government-backed program that was originally established in 2012 to improve and safeguard responsible general sports and football betting policies in Great Britain.

The principle focus of the recently launched Sports Betting Integrity Forum is to unite sport and betting trade associations, sports governing bodies, betting operators, law enforcement organizations, and gambling regulators in order to stop match-fixing and to combat corruption in sport competitions throughout the United Kingdom.

The Association of British Bookmakers, the Professional Players Federation, and the Remote Gambling Association have all committed specialized representatives to the Forum. The united and concerted efforts of the Forum are designed to supplement the ongoing work of the UK Gambling Commission and to support the official British Action Plan to address general threats to sports integrity.

Darren Bailey, forum co-chair and FA director of Football Governance and Regulation, announced that the new organization would take a comprehensive approach to develop and enhance anti-match-fixing measures across the full spectrum of UK sport.

“British sport and its partner organisations take the matter of integrity with the utmost seriousness,” he said. Bailey went on to explain how the Forum will maintain a duel focus at the “organisational and national level” to raise awareness of potential threats, develop far-reaching intelligence reports, strengthen preventative measures within sports and betting markets, and coordinate anticorruption policies at the national and international levels.

The recent launch event featured a brief overview of the Forum’s early accomplishments, including the creation of effective primary warning systems and the collaborative management of criminal sports betting corruption cases. The FA was honoured to include Britain’s Minister for Sport, Helen Grant, among its esteemed guests.
