New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has formally announced that he will retire from international cricket after the second Test match against Australia next year February. This means that 34-year-old McCullum will not be available for the World T20 next year March in India. However, Kane Williams is expected to lead New Zealand in the marquee tournament in India.
McCullum said he would have preferred to officially announce his retirement after the second Test against Australia, but the pressure of waiting for New Zealand’s World T20 squad forced him to drop the bombshell in Christchurch.
McCullum is the first player to play so many succeeding matches from debut. As a batsman, he has been an aggressive player, and fighting largely in the middle order in all Tests. His stellar performance made him become New Zealand’s first batsman to hit a triple century against India in Willington last year. He also became the first New Zealand batsman to break 1 000 runs in the 2014 calendar, also not forgetting breaching 195 runs against Sri Lanka last year and a double century against Pakistan.
With the above mentioned accolades accomplished throughout his international cricket career, it isn’t hard to believe that McCullum is currently the second-record holder for most Test sixes together with Adam Gilchrist and he had his 100th six in the Dunedin Test.
McCullum will play his last Test match of his career from the 20th February 2016.
