Update: On June 16, 2022, Governor Whitmer rejected the casino proposal in Muskegon County, MI, leading the Little River Band of Indians to indefinitely pause the project.

In early 2021, the Little River Band of Indians secured the essential federal approvals for their intended Muskegon County casino. The next step required them to obtain Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s approval for a new gaming compact to initiate construction of the $180 million Lakeshore Casino and Resort.

The proposed establishment was to be built at the former Great Lakes Downs racetrack, near the junction of U.S. 31 and I-96 in Muskegon, Michigan. This venue was planned to feature a 220-room hotel along with 69,000 square feet of gaming space, offering 1,700 slot machines and 35 table games.

Tribal Ogema Larry Romanelli expressed that, pending all necessary approvals, the project was anticipated to reach completion within two years.

The Little River Band already operates a casino resort approximately 90 miles away from this proposed location in Manistee, Michigan.
