At the World Cup, England suffered a 111-run beating by Australia. Despite looking well set at 152 for two in the 27th over after Jason Roy’s opening round of 67 from 67 balls, the hosts, England, were bowled-out for 246 with 27 balls left chasing 306. It would have been a 12th four if Roy was not caught.
“We still have a long way to go, but defeat in the first One Day International (ODI) is part of a learning curve.” – England captain, Eoin Morgan admits. He also insisted that they should have played better in their run chase, but the experience will assist them well down the line.
Rashid and Roy were praised by Morgan for their performances. Roy put on 70 for England’s first wicket before Hales recklessly holed out off Marsh. His innings ended when he sliced off spinner Maxwell to point on 67.
With Matthew Wade’s and Marsh’s stand a seventh wicket record for Australia against England, they both added 93 runs in the last 10 overs.
The five match series will continue on Saturday at Lord’s.
