Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes Benz beat his team mate Nico Rosberg to take a major win at the Belgian GP to increase his championship lead this past Sunday. For the second time in his F1 career he accomplished at Spa-Francorchamps, though he had an additional victory in 2008 cancelled out for a questionable overtaking violation. Hamilton took his sixth win and increased his world title lead to 28 points.
“I didn’t feel like I was under pressure although Nico was extremely fast,” Says Hamilton. Though the fast-flowing racing track is usually listed by drivers as being among their favourites on the calendar, Hamilton said it wasn’t one of his.
After his successive impressive pole and race victory double, Hamilton spoke to Sky Sports F1 and explained why he always found the Spa track exceptionally challenging. “For some reason, there are tracks that really suit your driving type and this is a really difficult track. Without a doubt this is one of those tracks I’ve struggled a little bit more,” Hamilton added.
“I did the best and took out the most of the race, but for me it was a weaker circuit, when it’s been raining, it made it easier for me,” he added.
He added that he was really happy with the performance he had this past weekend predominantly in qualifying. Above all, Nico was very fast but he was able to match him when he needed to.
In the opening stages of the race, Hamilton was challenged by Sergio Perez when he was momentarily overtaken. Hamilton added that it would have been a different outcome if it had been the other way around and Nico was there, but Sergio was great.
Hamilton was pleased to match his childhood hero Ayrton Senna’s of 80 F1 podium finishes after winning the Belgian GP race.
