From Runway to TV Series Fashion Showdown

The costume fashion evolution in Game of Thrones is one which not only inspires, but continues to redefine TV series clothing. With each season we’ve seen characters transformed into demigods thus taking us to a world we only wish existed. What many are unaware of is that most of the fashion-forward garments worn by the characters are stripped from runways!

With TV being a visual medium, the role of fashion is even more prominent. To create a look for each character is a challenge Michele Clapton and her team of costume designers had to master. Through her vision, the Emmy-award winning Costume Designer has brought all character looks to life.

The term “you are what you wear” was a testament in a number of episodes some of which include: Season 1 “The Prince of Winterfell which landed Clapton her very first Emmy Award.

Award-winning Costume Designer Creates Slick Looks!

Clapton’s discussions with author George R.R Martin laid the foundation of the shows look. Through her consulting with Martin, she was able to create the appearance of some of the major characters including Lannisters and Starks. Clapton’s team, which includes 100 people who are made up of hairstylists, fitters and major designers, allowed her to create chic costumes.

On estimate, one episode requires around 700 individual costumers which apply for shots of crowds in all big cities or extras that were part of the armies. An interesting aspect about costuming is that it adds a new element to the story. With Seven Kingdoms, a unique look assists viewers in setting them apart. Characters from the Reach, the North and the Westerlands are spotted easily.

The nature of each region is also easily identified which also gives more information about each one. For example, the Westerlands are rich in precious metals; hence the clothing worn by the Lannister is mostly made up of jewelry and plate metal.

The Rulers and their fashion explained

The show has its own trendsetters and when we mean trend, we’re talking fashion Gods! The ruling families are known for wearing, fashion-must have’s, their costumes are a hierarchical class which also separates them from their commoners. For example, the Westerlands families like to dress like the Lannisters and the Reach also do the same with the Tyrells. Trends are set and followed and it looks like it’s more of a universal rule of thumb.

According to Clapton, “The design of the noble’s clothes spirals outward; what they wear inspires the people around them, from the ladies-in-waiting to the household staff, on down to the peasants”.

Some major costume runway stealers include: Brienne of Tarth X Hermes SS 2014 which was featured in episode 1, Bran Stark X Topshop Unique FW 2010 featured in Episode 2 and Margaery Tyrell X Julien Macdonald FW 2011 which was well captured in Episode 2.

The relationship between character and costume continues to speak volumes. With each episode, we stay glued to our screens as we are left mesmerized by the story and the fashion we’ve now come to love.  One could say that with every season, its Game of Thrones meets the runway!
