Two-time world champion McLaren – Honda driver, Fernando Alonso, says he can be world champion again. Alonso, who won world drivers’ title back in 2005 and 2006 for Renault, believes that he can still win a third World Championship regardless of the challenges currently faced by his McLaren-Honda team.
According to BBC.COM, in an interview with Spanish radio station COPE, 34-year-old Alonso was asked if he thinks he can be a champion for the third time, he said yes he thinks so. He further explained that when he competes, he competes to win. If there was no chance of winning, he wouldn’t do it.
Eric Boullier, McLaren racing director, has anticipated that the McLaren team will make a huge improvement this year. Alonso, who ended up in fifth place in Hungary last year, said that he doesn’t think they are far from achieving at this stage. He further expressed his views by saying he would be amazed if they achieved it at the start of the season because not everything would be in place in the first few races.
The Spaniard Alonso believes that they are the only team who can eventually beat Mercedes, who are still ahead of everyone else. Alonso’s replacement Sebastian Vettel won three races with Ferrari last year to finish third in the standings. Commenting on his replacement, Alonso told Spanish radio that he was offered to renew his contract with Ferrari until 2019 and he did not want to accept it. “I would have never been world champion there,” said Alonso. He concluded by saying now he enjoys Formula 1 more being 10 positions further behind.
