Australian businessman and Crown Melbourne Executive Director, James Packer, is adding an indulgent six star hotel to the Southbank casino precinct. British architects Wilkinson Eyre have designed the 90-storey hotel which features 388 rooms, a lounge, publicly accessible restaurant and garden veranda at the top of 317-metre glass tower.
Packer said in a statement on Monday that Wilkinson Eyre has designed a stylish and beautiful building that is intended to be a valuable addition to the Melbourne skyline. Rowen Craigie, Crown chief executive, said that during the construction, the project will create 3 000 jobs, with 1 000 permanent positions after the completion, which is definitely wonderful in the aspect of job creation.
Melbourne will also attract more tourists, reinforcing the city’s appearance as a destination for important sporting and cultural events, as well as international conferences. The Herald Sun has allegedly reported that the Queensbridge hotel tower will cost $1.5bn and the tower will be higher than the Eureka tower in Southbank.
Melbourne city councilor, Stephen Mayne, said in a statement that state government planning laws, height limits and federal government restrictions might delay the development as to the height of buildings permitted under flight paths. Mayne also told ABC radio that a general message was sent out that you shouldn’t build above 250m buildings because of the flight path restrictions. Naturally, Queensbridge hotel tower will be above that. Something above 300m would be an interesting one for the aviation regulators and Turnbull government to consider.
