World number two, Andy Murray, has secured his place in the French Open third round after beating Mathias Bourgue in five sets. The two-time Grand Slam winner lost eight games consecutively and fell a set behind the inspired Grand Slam debutant, Bourgue.
Bourgue, the world number 164 from France, was a match for the tournament and looked a proper draw for Murray on paper. 29-year-old Murray used all his experience to secure a 6-2 2-6 4-6 6-2 6-3 victory over Bourgue.
Fellow Briton Kyle Edmund was beaten 6-4 6-4 6-4 by an American 15th seed John Isler. Aljaž Bedene, who faces Pablo Carreño on Thursday, 26 May 2016, is the only other remaining British player in the Singles Tennis Tournaments in Paris, France.
Murray told BBC Sport that he could not explain his inconsistent play, he just lost his way. In the second set, Murray looked to be in a complete control at 2-0, but his form changed drastically. Bourgue broke the world number two three times and won six games consecutively to take the set and level the match.
In the opening game of the next set, Murray made double-faulted twice and further unforced mistakes. However, he fought back and eventually broke Bourgue’s eight-game winning run by the third game on set.
