Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams are through to the second round. Williams needed just 30 minutes to begin her bid for a first calendar Grand Slam. Taking out injury timeouts, Williams won her first US Open 2015 match in a grand total of 21 minutes of playing time, a 6-2 2-0 victory over Vitalia Diatchenk who was struggling with injury before retiring.
Djokovic vs Nadal Again
Nadal, saw off 18 year old Borna Coric 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4 and seeded eight. Novak Djokovic went through, but fourth seeded Kei Nishikori was beaten by world number one. “I don’t think I played bad, Djokovic was playing good tennis, but It’s always very sad to lose in the first round” – Nishikori explained. Nishikori also lost to Marin Cilic in last year’s US Open final.
Djokovic went through to the second round by sweeping past Brazil’s Joao Souza 6-1 6-1 6-1 and Nadal showed some pointers of his best form in beating Coric. He dominated the first two sets and then saw off a refreshed Coric in the fourth with a forceful forehand to earn a crucial break.
“The first two sets was a very high level for me, then I got a little bit tired” – Nadal said. Sadly, many other seeded players saw their championship dreams fade away by losing on Monday.
